Koh Chang, the second largest island in Thailand, remained a hidden treasure for many decades. It wasn’t until the early 1980s that it became a top diving destination. Also known as Elephant Island because of its elephant like shape, this tranquil destination boasts splendid reefs teeming with colorful underwater wildlife, all of which are protected by the Mu Ko Chang Marine National Park.

No matter what your diving level, an underwater adventured always awaits you when diving in Koh Chang, Thailand. While you can dive all season in Koh Hang, prime season starts in October/November and lasts through April/May. The best sites for diving Koh Chang are located off the southern part of the island. Each site offers a unique experience sure to appeal to any diving enthusiast. The main sites include:

  • Wreck of the Thonburi – Sunk during a battle with the French in 1941, this ship now serves as an artificial reef.
  • Hin Luk Bat – One of the most popular sites in the area, this large rock pinnacle allows divers the chance to explore its formation and varied marine inhabitants at many different depths.
  • Hin Rap – South of Hin Luk Bat, this rock pinnacle attracts smaller marine life and is resplendent with staghorn corals.
  • Koh Wai – If getting up close and personal with sharks is your thing, check out this site to view reef and leopard sharks.
  • Additional locations – Just south of Koh Chang is the island of Koh Rang, which offers some of the areas best dive sites for exploring coral and marine life, including a chance to swim with the turtles and view rays and eels lurking among the cavities of the various rocks.

Since all the sites for diving Koh Chang aren’t available right off the beach, it is essential to book a charted boat through one of the island’s diving schools to gain access. Whether you’re looking for a day trip, a try scuba trip or snorkeling trip, it’s important to explore each school’s offerings and talk to them before you head out on your underwater adventure.
